An ode to PdZ
Let’s not underestimate the power of a good venue. But makes a good venue? In short, I’m looking for three things:
Convenience. The venue needs to be easy to access. Since we’re in Amsterdam, we mostly need bike, and public transport access. Since no one wants to bike outside the ring, our friendly no bikers from out of town can enjoy the frequent and affordable tramway number 26 or bus N89, 43 and 426. In addition, you can easily walk and enjoy the view on the Amstel, from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Pakhuis de Zwijger - or PdZ.
Professionalism. Little event organizing tip, if you are gathering more than friends and family, let’s say 600 guests from all over the world, with really high internet expectations, you need a venue partner you can count on. A partner with whom you are ready to exchange hundreds of emails and nerd out on the small details - where shall we put the water jugs? - what food truck do we want on the 2nd day? Can we bring our own beers? And I’m happy to report that the PdZ team has been a dream to work with during DeFiDay in 2022 and ETHDam 2023. Friendly, professional, they took care of everything and delivered - allowing me to focus on things other than production or catering.
Offbeat. PdZ is different and I like it. Is it the poshest place? Nope. Does it have too many stairs? I might have heard some complaints. Shall I move ETHDam to the RAI? Never. I want to keep ETHDam cozy, gezellig and familiar. At the same time, PdZ is very modular and can host our weird mix of conference and hackathon. Offering a beautiful main stage, for our grandiose speakers to carpeted rooms for the serious workshops and an outside space for the burning magicians tricks, all the while accommodating all our hackers.
